The PhD research position is funded through a 3-year employment contract (TV-L E13 65 %) starting at the earliest possible date. The candidate has the opportunity to complete their doctoral research and dissertation within three years. Health and social insurance are included in the contract.

The Volkswagen Foundation-funded research project »Madness, Media, Milieus. Reconfiguring the Humanities in Postwar Europe« explores a series of media and milieu practices developed in different settings of institutional psychotherapy since the 1940s. It examines efforts to produce environments, institutions, and milieus that would facilitate processes of psychological therapy and healing, in particular by psychiatrists and activists such as François Tosquelles, Gisela Pankow, Jean Oury, Anne Querrien, Ginette Michaud, Fernand Deligny, Frantz Fanon and Félix Guattari. The PhD candidate is expected to develop a sub-project focused on the psychiatric work of Frantz Fanon, his experiences at the psychiatric hospital of Blida-Joinville, Algeria, as well as its relationship to anti-, post- and decolonial discourses. The project activity will likewise involve archival research and critical theoretical analysis, bridging psychiatric and historical knowledge from the fields of institutional psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, existential philosophy, phenomenology, as well as art and media.

Field activity:
- Constructive collaboration in an interdisciplinary project of media, philosophy, art, history of psychiatry and psychoanalysis.
- Writing of three scientific papers for peer-review journals and preparation of a doctoral dissertation.
- Willingness and ability to programmatically develop further research perspectives.

Hiring requirements:
